During World War II, Soviet physicist Georgy Flyorov suspected the United States and Britain had started a secret atomic bomb program after Western scientists suddenly stopped publishing nuclear research. He warned Joseph Stalin in 1942, correctly guessing that nuclear science had become a military secret. Stalin authorized the Soviet atomic bomb project, and Soviet research later moved through Moscow’s Laboratory No. 2 under Igor Kurchatov before the USSR tested its first nuclear weapon in 1949.
