Ole Romer Timed Light’s Speed

In 1676, Danish astronomer Ole Romer estimated the speed of light by timing the eclipses of Io, one of Jupiter’s moons. He noticed that the eclipses appeared later when Earth was farther from Jupiter and earlier when Earth was closer. Romer concluded that light did not travel instantly because it needed more time to cross the extra distance between the two planets.
