For the movie “Interstellar,” American theoretical physicist Kip Thorne wrote pages of equations so the visual effects team could create a scientifically grounded black hole. The team used that math to build the film’s striking depiction of Gargantua, where gravity bends light around the black hole. The process gave Thorne new scientific insights, and the work eventually helped produce three scientific papers.
