Metacomet’s Head Haunted Plymouth

The son of the man who welcomed the Puritans and helped feed them when they were starving later had his head cut off and displayed on a spike for about 20 years in Plymouth. That man was Metacomet, also known as King Philip, the son of Wampanoag leader Massasoit. After Metacomet led Native resistance during King Philip’s War, colonial forces killed him in 1676, dismembered his body, and displayed his head near the place remembered for the first Thanksgiving.
