Newborns Hear Every Language First

Newborns can distinguish the sounds used across the world’s languages, including about 600 consonants and 200 vowels. During the first year, their brains start tuning themselves to the sounds they hear most in their native language. By their first birthday, they lose sensitivity to many unused sounds, which helps explain why adult language learners often keep a foreign accent.
