Karl Schwarzschild Solved Black Holes

In 1915, German physicist Karl Schwarzschild solved Albert Einstein’s field equations while serving on the World War I Eastern Front and dying of disease. His solution described what would later be understood as a black hole, long before the term was coined. Schwarzschild wrote to Einstein, "The war treated me kindly enough to allow me to take this walk in the land of your ideas." He died only months later.
