In 1999, Mexia Supermarket in Fort Worth, Texas, suddenly closed, and the owners walked away with unsold food still inside. After the electricity went off, perishable food rotted for months in the Texas heat, drawing flies, cockroaches, and rats while neighbors complained about the stench.
