Komodo Dragon Mauled Phil Bronstein

In 2001, actress Sharon Stone arranged a private visit to the Los Angeles Zoo’s Komodo dragon pen for her then-husband, investigative journalist and editor Phil Bronstein, who had always wanted to see one up close. A zookeeper invited Bronstein into the cage, where the lizard began licking his white shoes before he removed them on the keeper’s advice. When Bronstein moved to take a photo, the Komodo dragon lunged, bit his foot, and jerked back and forth as it tried to eat it. Bronstein survived and did not press charges, but Stone later said the top half of his foot was gone.
