In 2017, scientists working on damaged parts of the Great Barrier Reef discovered that playing recordings of a healthy coral reef could draw fish back to degraded reef areas. They placed underwater speakers near dead coral patches and broadcast the crackling, buzzing sounds of a thriving reef. After 40 days, the speaker sites attracted about twice as many fish as similar areas without the sound.
