In 2009, scientists announced the discovery of 28 fossils of Titanoboa, the largest extinct snake species ever found, in a coal mine in Colombia. The giant snake lived about 60 million years ago, after the dinosaurs disappeared, in a hot tropical rainforest. Researchers estimated that Titanoboa reached about 48 feet long and weighed roughly 2,500 pounds.
