In 1902, workers accidentally discovered the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola, Malta, while cutting cisterns for a housing development. The underground Neolithic burial complex dates to around 4000 to 2500 BC, making it older than Egypt’s pyramids by up to about 1,000 years. Archaeologists found the remains of more than 7,000 people inside its rock-cut chambers. The discovery revealed one of Malta’s most important prehistoric sites, linked to a Neolithic temple-building culture that faded around 2500 BC.
