In 2024, a PhD student named Luke Auld-Thomas found the hidden Maya city of Valeriana in Campeche, Mexico, while searching online for lidar data. He said he was around page 16 of Google results when he found a laser survey that a Mexican organization had made for environmental monitoring. When researchers analyzed the data, they identified more than 6,500 pre-Hispanic structures, including pyramids, plazas, a ball court, and a reservoir. The discovery revealed the presence of a significant Maya city, previously concealed near a highway and farmland.
