In the US, sober addicts can have a legally protected disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA National Network says addiction generally counts as a disability because it affects brain and neurological functions, but the law treats alcohol addiction and illegal drug use differently. People recovering from opioids or other illegal drugs receive protection only when they are no longer currently using drugs illegally, including when they take prescribed medications such as methadone, Suboxone, or Vivitrol.
