Octopus Reproduction Triggers Death Spiral

Octopus Reproduction Triggers Death Spiral

All octopuses are programmed to die after reproducing, as hormones from the optic gland trigger a rapid physical decline. Males usually deteriorate within days or weeks after mating, while females stop eating and spend their final stretch guarding their eggs. Even in ideal conditions, no octopus lives longer than about 5 years, making reproduction the beginning of the end for the entire animal.
