China consumes about 46% of the world’s cigarettes, with more than 2.4 trillion sold there every year. No country burns through more cigarettes, and the scale comes partly from China Tobacco, a state-run monopoly that dominates the country’s cigarette market. The company has also resisted stronger tobacco controls for decades.
