US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they erased nearly two decades of progress. In 2022โ23, average math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors later hit their lowest point since NAEP testing began in 1992. The Nationโs Report Card also showed that 13-year-olds lost ground in both math and reading compared with 2020, making the decline part of a broader national slide.
