Speedy Gonzales Fans Fought Back

Speedy Gonzales Fans Fought Back

In 1999, Cartoon Network shelved Speedy Gonzales cartoons after deciding the Looney Tunes mouse carried offensive ethnic stereotypes. The move backfired when the League of United Latin American Citizens called Speedy a cultural icon, and thousands of fans pushed for the character’s return. Cartoon Network brought the Speedy Gonzales shorts back in 2002 after the protest campaign showed many Hispanic-American viewers saw him as a quick-witted hero, not an insult.
