Victorian Prisoners Turned Nothing Useful

In Victorian England, prisoners were made to work on a “crank machine,” a hand crank connected to a box filled with sand. When they turned the crank, the machine pulled cups through the sand inside the box, but produced nothing useful. Prisoners were often forced to turn the crank for hours a day, making the punishment intentionally exhausting and pointless.
