Before British politician Margaret Thatcher became the United Kingdom's first female prime minister, she worked as a research chemist at Oxford University. In 1951, she co-authored a scientific paper on the "saponification of alpha-monostearin." Thatcher later said she felt prouder of earning her science degree than of becoming prime minister.
