When humans sleep, certain brain signals help neurons shrink so cerebrospinal fluid can wash away waste. Washington University School of Medicine researchers found that neurons help drive this nighttime cleaning system by sending rhythmic electrical signals during sleep. Those waves move fluid through brain tissue and push out metabolic waste that builds up during waking hours. The process works most strongly during deep sleep.
