Scientists still do not have one universally accepted explanation for why a curling stone bends as it slides across the ice. For decades, physicists tested competing ideas involving front-to-back friction differences, thin water films, and scratch patterns left by the stone’s running band. Some newer studies support a “scratch-guiding” mechanism and argue it may be the dominant cause, while other papers still describe the curl question as lacking a fully established answer.
