Dhaka muslin from Bengal in India was once so valuable and so transparent that European observers treated it as scandalously revealing. The fabric’s decline followed colonial exploitation under the East India Company, which disrupted the growers, spinners, and weavers who made it possible. For generations, the original process was treated as a lost art. Modern revival efforts have now partially recreated it, but the exact historical mastery of classic Dhaka muslin has still not been fully recovered.
