In 2017, astronomers detected 'Oumuamua, the first known interstellar object ever seen passing through our solar system. It came from outside the solar system, showed an unusual tumbling shape, and then picked up a small but measurable acceleration as it moved away from the Sun. Researchers now think that acceleration was likely caused by some form of outgassing or behavior similar to what later got called a dark comet, but the exact mechanism is still debated because no obvious coma or tail was seen.
