The Milky Way is moving at about 600 kilometers per second toward a massive region of gravity called the Great Attractor. Astronomers cannot see that region clearly in visible light because the Milky Way’s dusty galactic plane blocks much of it behind the Zone of Avoidance. Researchers have identified major hidden structures there, including the Norma Cluster, and they now think even larger mass concentrations beyond it also contribute to the pull. That means the motion is real, but the full structure behind it is still only partly mapped.
