Lactose intolerance is the normal human condition, because only about one-third of adults worldwide remain lactase persistent and keep producing enough lactase to digest milk after childhood. The European lactase-persistence mutation spread across Eurasia between about 4,000 and 3,500 years ago, and its rise in frequency matches the migrations of steppe populations into and across Europe.
