Bear’s Original Name Vanished

Bear’s Original Name Vanished

Ancient ancestors in northern Europe feared bears so much that they avoided speaking the animal’s original name aloud. According to the account, the ancient ancestors believed that saying the original name might summon the beast, so they used a safer euphemism that meant "the brown one" instead. Over time, that substitute evolved into the English word "bear." The original name disappeared so completely that the word used by those ancestors remains unknown today.
