Columbia Search Found Challenger Pieces

After Space Shuttle Columbia broke up in 2003, investigators launched a massive search to recover debris across the U.S. During the cleanup, officials announced a three-day amnesty that promised no prosecution for people who had taken shuttle pieces. That deal worked so well that some private citizens turned in debris from the Space Shuttle Challenger too, even though it had been lost 17 years earlier.
