After the Joker debuted in "Batman" #1 (1940), DC originally planned to kill him off in his second appearance. Editors quickly backed out of that ending, keeping him alive instead of closing the book on him. That last-second reversal let the Joker stick around long enough to become Batman’s signature enemy and a lasting pop-culture icon.
