Star Trek Wanted Dolphins

The sci-fi tv show "Star Trek: The Next Generation" originally toyed with the idea of having dolphins and whales as actual Starfleet crewmembers. The problem was filming it convincingly would have been too expensive, so the show dropped the plan before it ever hit the screen. Instead, the concept survived mostly as a background detail, with occasional references to "Cetacean Operations."
