An ancient Greek named Eumastas was credited with lifting a black volcanic boulder weighing more than 920 pounds off the ground. The claim survives because the stone itself bears the inscription, "Eumastas, the son of Critobulus, lifted me from the ground." Modern classicists long doubted such boasts, but powerlifting scholar Nigel Crowther argued that the feat was physically plausible. Even today, that weight sits surprisingly close to modern elite deadlift territory.
