James Smithson, the founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution, never visited the United States and had no known personal tie to the country. When he died in 1829, the British scientist left his fortune to his nephew, with the condition that if the nephew died without heirs, the money would go to the United States to found an institution for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.
