Green Day’s Stolen Masters

Green Day’s Stolen Masters

After the rock band Green Day finished recording an album called Cigarettes and Valentines in 2003, someone stole the master tapes from the band’s studio. The band could have rebuilt the record from backups, but bassist Mike Dirnt later said it did not feel the same as the originals. They instead chased a new batch of songs they thought were stronger. That decision led directly to American Idiot, the 2004 rock opera that became one of the biggest albums of their career.
