In the 1990s, filmmaker James Cameron developed an early Spider-Man script before Sam Raimi’s 2002 film ever reached theaters, and Cameron later said he had Leonardo DiCaprio in mind for Peter Parker. His version pushed the character in a much darker direction, with heavy profanity, harsher violence, and a graphic sex scene between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson on the Brooklyn Bridge. The project never moved forward after the film rights became tangled in legal and studio problems.
