Captain America Punched Hitler Early

In March 1941, Timely Comics released Captain America Comics #1 with a cover that showed Captain America punching Adolf Hitler, months before the United States entered World War II in December 1941. At a time when many Americans still opposed going to war with Germany, American comic creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, both Jewish, used the character to take an unusually direct political stand. The cover provoked backlash and brought them death threats, but New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who admired the comic, promised protection.
