Many U.S. states have chosen an official state fossil as part of their state identity. Colorado, for example, picked Stegosaurus stenops, the plated Jurassic dinosaur closely tied to fossils found in the American West. Other states chose everything from mammoths and trilobites to dinosaur tracks and petrified wood.
