In 2011, paleontologists named a dinosaur from Utah Brontomerus, a name that literally means “thunder thighs.” They gave it that name because its unusual hip bone suggested it had extremely large thigh muscles for a sauropod. That made Brontomerus stand out as one of the strangest long-necked dinosaurs ever described. But because the fossils are so incomplete, some later scientists argued the dinosaur may be too fragmentary to classify with confidence.
