People often say dinosaurs evolved into birds, but paleontologists usually frame it a little differently: birds are dinosaurs that survived. They belong inside the theropod branch, in the same broad dinosaur lineage that also produced predators like Tyrannosaurus rex. More specifically, bird ancestry sits within Maniraptora, a subgroup inside Coelurosauria. So dinosaurs did not vanish completely at the end of the Cretaceous, because one branch of them is still flying around today.
