Apex Became Auction Record Holder

In July 2024, a mostly complete Stegosaurus skeleton nicknamed Apex went up for auction at Sotheby’s in New York. The fossil sold for $44.6 million, making it the most expensive fossil ever sold at auction, and billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin later emerged as the buyer. Apex earned that attention partly because it is the largest known Stegosaurus specimen and is remarkably complete, with 254 preserved bones out of about 319. After the sale, the fossil did not disappear into storage, and it later went on public display at the American Museum of Natural History.
