In 480 BC, a man named Ephialtes of Trachis betrayed the Greeks at Thermopylae by showing the Persians a path around their position. Ephialtes expected a reward for his information, but he never received it. After the Greeks defeated the Persians, the Amphictyonic League offered a bounty for his death, and he fled. A man named Athenades of Trachis later killed Ephialtes for an unrelated reason, but Sparta still honored the bounty and rewarded the killer anyway.
