In the 1950s, American puppeteer Jim Henson used early versions of his Muppet characters in commercials that leaned into darker comedy, not kid-friendly lessons. Henson had originally aimed the Muppets at adults and did not see them as a tool for children’s education or family entertainment. He envisioned something closer to an edgy, grown-up comedy show than an educational program like Sesame Street.
