Ondine’s curse, also known as central hypoventilation syndrome, occurs when damage to the brain disrupts the automatic control of breathing. Patients can breathe consciously while awake, but when they fall asleep, the subconscious drive fails, causing breathing to slow or stop. This makes the condition potentially fatal without medical support such as ventilators or assisted breathing devices.
