When a body decomposes long enough, skin slip can occur, i.e., the outer layer of skin can separate from the underlying tissue. When forensic investigators need to identify a body, they can remove the loosened skin from a finger or hand and place it over their own finger, similar to a glove, to recover usable fingerprints. This technique allows identification even when decomposition has severely damaged the body.
