The evolutionary shift from egg laying to placental birth in humans may have been driven in part by DNA from an ancient retrovirus. This viral DNA coded for a protein that allows placental cells to fuse, forming a barrier that prevents maternal and fetal blood from mixing and helps protect the fetus from the mother’s immune system.
