Modern mammals are the only vertebrates with three tiny middle-ear bones fully separated from the jaw. That anatomical split was crucial because it let mammals chew and hear at the same time instead of forcing both jobs through the same structure. It also improved sensitivity to high-pitched sounds, giving mammals a hearing range that other vertebrates never developed in the same way.
