After American General Benedict Arnold defected to the British during the Revolutionary War, his betrayal outraged people in his hometown of Norwich, Connecticut. Anger intensified in 1781 when British forces under Arnold attacked and burned the nearby port of New London. According to local accounts, furious residents responded by digging up the grave of Arnold’s father and throwing the bones into a river.
