Herxheim’s 1,000 Ritual Killings

The Herxheim archaeological site in Germany dates to around 5000 BC and contains the remains of more than 1,000 individuals. Researchers found evidence that many of the victims had been brought from distant regions before being killed at the settlement. Their bones show cut marks, deliberate breakage, and other signs associated with butchery, leading archaeologists to conclude the victims were likely ritually killed and possibly cannibalized.
