Only one known person is recorded to have died in the Catacombs of Paris (as of 2025). In 1793, a hospital porter named Philibert Aspairt entered the underground tunnels beneath the city and became lost. It is believed he lost his light source and wandered in the darkness until he died. His body was discovered in 1804, just a few meters from a staircase that led to an exit.
