Early 20th-century actress Maude Adams wanted to create a film version of Peter Pan but refused to shoot it in black and white. Because color film and adequate lighting technology did not yet exist, she began working with engineers and technical experts to solve the problem. Adams devoted years to researching theatrical lighting and stage illumination. Her work eventually led her to earn several electric-light patents during the 1930s.
