Direct voluntary control of pupil dilation and constriction in humans was long considered impossible because the reflex is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. In 2021, however, a 23-year-old man in Germany demonstrated to doctors that he could deliberately change the size of his pupils. Researchers observed that he could drastically dilate or constrict them on command without changes in lighting.
