The 1964 film "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" was directed by Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, who openly described himself as an atheist, Marxist, and homosexual. Despite Pasolini’s beliefs, the movie was praised for its faithful and powerful portrayal of the life of Jesus. The official Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano later called it “the best film on Christ ever made.”
